The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed and produced by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It is the successor to the PlayStation 4 and was released on November 12, 2020. The PS5 features a number of new technologies and improvements over its predecessor, including:
- A custom-designed CPU based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture and a custom-designed GPU based on the RDNA 2 microarchitecture, which provide significant performance improvements over the PS4.
- A built-in solid-state drive (SSD) that greatly reduces loading times and improves overall system performance.
- Support for ray tracing, which allows for more realistic lighting and reflections in games.
- 3D audio, which provides a more immersive gaming experience by simulating sound in 3D space.
- Backwards compatibility with a majority of PS4 games, allowing players to continue playing their existing library of games on the new console.
- A new DualSense controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, which provide a more immersive gaming experience.
The PS5 also offers some new features such as the PlayStation Plus Collection, a selection of PS4 games that are available to download at no extra cost for PS Plus members. Also, the PS5 has a built-in HD camera that allows for video chat and recording of gameplay footage.
